CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS—
On November 23rd, 2019 at 12:30 PM ET the Columbia Lions will go toe to toe against an unfamiliar opponent.
Team President Andrew Dunn announced that the Lions will face the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a non-conference game next season. The two powerhouse academic schools haven’t played each other in an official non-conference game in recent memory, and this instalment will count towards Columbia’s official rankings.
The Engineers went 4-6-0 in 10 recorded games last season.
Forward Carson Smith led the way for the Engineers with 16 points in 8 games, good for an even 8 goals and 8 assists.
Since the 2014-2015 season, Forwards Jon Pounds and Isaac Lajoie have the best recorded seasons for the Engineers, with 25 points in a campaign.
Much like recruits, look for the Lions to announce more non-conference games as the start of the season inches closer to commencing. MIT is certainly a high profile game, and fans should be looking forward to the Boston vs. New York history in this matchup; MIT’s main campus is only about 4 hours from Columbia’s, and about 15 minutes from downtown Boston.
Columbia F Benjamin Vermette, the team's second leading scorer from last season, who looks to one day walk on Mars, said that he is “anxious to play a Space-Grant institution” come late November.
This other-worldly matchup should be a timeless classic, and one that is remembered around the circles of higher education in the Atlantic Northeast for years to come.
